Under the umbrella of the Federation

Egg or chicken? There are different types of chickens that lay eggs with different uses. Eggs are used for consumption, breeding, and making vaccines against winter flu.

The Producteurs d’Oeufs d’Incubation du Québec (POIQ) has hen houses filled with hens that produce eggs to breed chicks that will become either broilers or pullets that will be raised to lay hens. Once the eggs are hatched, they go to the hatchery where they will be placed in an incubator
Transferred to the hatcher 18 days in advance so that the chicks emerge after three days. These chicks will go to hen houses where they will be raised to become broilers or to pullet breeders who will raise them for up to 19 weeks to produce the egg-laying hens we consume. Be aware, if you have ever built a home hatch and tried to hatch your retailer purchased eggs, you will have to wait a long time to see the chick hatch because the eggs are not fertilized for consumption . There is no cock in the hen’s nest whose eggs end up on our plates.

Finally, there are five vaccine egg producers who produce fertilized eggs for the pharmaceutical companies that produce vaccines to protect us from winter influenza.

pullet breeder

Eager to strengthen the supply chain in Quebec, the federation became affiliated with pullet breeders in 2019. Located between the hatchery and the egg producers, they are responsible for raising female chicks into hens ready to lay their first eggs. There are approximately a hundred pullet breeders in Quebec.

Most pullet breeders in Quebec are also egg producers to meet their needs. To anticipate, analyze and face the challenges and issues of this important link of the egg production sector, the Federation has constituted a Committee of Pullet Breeders.

An agreement was reached with Quebec Hatching Egg Producers so that unincubated eggs are purchased by the Quebec Egg Producers Federation which resells them to processors, thus preventing them from being thrown away. FPOQ is the only provincial office in Canada that acts as a sales agency for unfit eggs.

Hens lay eggs almost every day of the year, but the period of egg production is barely a season. Vaccine eggs are fertilized eggs that serve as a culture medium for the growth of the virus. Once the virus is released from each egg, it is inactivated to create the vaccine doses we receive to protect against the flu. Since the vaccine production period is short, they will have to find a market for the eggs produced by their chickens. An agreement with processors allows disposal of unused eggs by pharmaceutical companies.

Thus, the Federation brings together all categories of egg producers, allowing maximum utilization of all production without wasting it.
